It's official!
Our first born has had her first day of first grade.
She was just a little bit nervous at the thought of not having all of last year's friends in her class, but nothing that a closet full of new school clothes and new sparkley shoes (as requested) couldn't ease. She already knew her teacher so that made the transition that much easier. Plus as a first grader she was allowed to wear her very first backpack (hence her sideways pose so she could show it off).

They needed volunteers that day to help the first graders on their first day in the "cafeteria" area (really it's just a bunch of tables outside). One of the great things about Avery is that it doesn't take her long to make friends.
Avery found her first little "boyfriend" from last year (her words, not mine) right away (yes, that made me just a bit nervous...signs of things to come?!?!) and immediately began signing to him (he's deaf). Last year she became pretty good at signing but after a summer off, whether or not they were actual ASL signs, is debatable. He was a sport though and as kids tend to do, they didn't little things like not being able to talk to each other get in the way of their friendship.
Meanwhile, after cafeteria duty, Austin and I did our 2nd annual tradition of making a special first day of school treat for Avery. We did it last year and he was so proud when she came home to be able to show her what he made. This year was no different and this shirtless chef was pretty proud of the finished result (as was our little first grader). He has no problem being the first one to taste our creation as you can see.

We also had our first night of having a first day of school dinner and family home evening with my family. Avery helped decorate the table and as you can see Austin tried to share the credit.

Happy, happy school days, little first grader! We are so proud of you now that you are sooo big and going all day to school. We are proud of Austin too for being Mom's helper and keeping her from being lonely without Avery there too. Good job, both of you!! Thank you Avery for your phone call, that was such fun for Papa and me. love grammy
Happy first week of school, Avery! First grade! Wow! You looked so cute in your new school clothes, shoes, and backpack. I'm so glad you found your friend from last year, and made him feel welcome and happy by inviting him to sit with you during lunch. I know that's what Jesus would do too. Thanks for being a good example. Austin, have fun with Mom during these long days when Avery isn't home. You're a good companion to have around. Pretty soon it will be your turn to go. Love you lots, Grandma Malone
